Stikka SG

About Stikka SG

Stikka SG is the Singapore instance of Stikka, a free, open-source web app for printing stickers and labels on label printers anywhere in the world. It is hosted by Edible Makerspace, an open-source, DIY bio-hacker makerspace exploring food futures.

Open the label printer

How it works

  1. Design a label in your browser — an image, text, a QR code, Code 128, Aztec or Data Matrix code. Nothing is uploaded; everything is rendered locally.
  2. Pick a printer on the world map. Every printer is an ESP32 board wired to a label printer, and it appears as a flag pin at the location it reports.
  3. Print. The finished label travels over MQTT directly to that printer's ESP32 bridge, which forwards it to the label printer. There is no print server in between.

Supported hardware

PrinterConnection
Zebra (ZPL)Network, or USB
Brother QLUSB (the ESP32 acts as USB host)
Seiko SLPUSB

Bridge board: ESP32-S3 DevKitC-1, N16R8 version (16 MB flash, 8 MB PSRAM).

Add your printer to the map

  1. Flash the bridge firmware from the ESP32 Flasher tab of the app.
  2. Join the board's own Stikka-XXXXXX WiFi network (password stikkaesp32) and open http://1.2.3.4.
  3. Enter your WiFi, choose the printer type, give the printer a name and fill in the Details (optional) box under it with your location — a city or country such as Berlin or Singapore, or exact coordinates like My Space @1.35,103.82.
  4. Within about a minute it shows up on the map with its country flag.

Frequently asked questions

What is Stikka SG?

The Singapore instance of the open-source Stikka label-printing app, hosted by Edible Makerspace.

How does printing work without a print server?

Your browser renders the label itself, then publishes the finished job over MQTT to the printer's ESP32 bridge, which forwards it to the label printer.

Which printers does Stikka support?

Zebra printers using ZPL (over the network or USB), Brother QL printers over USB host, and Seiko SLP printers over USB.

Which ESP32 board do I need?

The ESP32-S3 DevKitC-1 in the N16R8 version. The extra memory is needed to handle label images.

How do I add my printer to the map?

Flash the firmware, open the board's setup page and set a printer name and fill in the Details box with your city. See the steps above.

Is Stikka free?

Yes. The software is open source and free to use, and no account is needed.
